Modern Warfare at your fingertips!

War Commander may not be the first real-time strategy game to hit Facebook, but it may be the best. While other top Facebook games stick to cartoon-y graphics, War Commander offers realistic and grungy environments that match the overall atmosphere of the game. You begin as the commander of a small, post-apocalyptic army. In order to keep the peace and take over new territory you must build structures to train units and research new technology. All of this building is funding by resources, which must be gathered or won as rewards for finishing quests.

None of these game play aspects may sound particularly inventive, but the game really shines by offering one of the first real-time battle control interfaces. Instead of pressing a button and finding out if your units won or lost, you control each unit during the battle with other players or against computer opponents. Your skill on the battlefield determines the outcome just as much as the strength of the units you choose. The game offers the same in-depth experience as console RTS games like Command & Conquer.

This new Facebook game only opened its public beta-testing in September of this year, but it already has over 800,000 regular users according to its official page. The team at Kixeye is behind this hit. Kixeye also brought us favorites like Backyard Monsters and Battle Pirates. While other great games usually have a 4 or 4.5 star rating on Facebook, War Commander currently has a full 5 stars after over 14,000 reviews. There’s no clearer indication possible of the quality and popularity of the real-time strategy experience created by War Commander.

After clearing the basic tutorial, you can learn more about game play through the optional quests or you can dive right into combat. You’ll have to fight other players on a real-time battlefield, so learning the controls and spending some resources improving your army is recommended. Growing a strong base isn’t enough if it’s not well defended. The game offers 27 different units, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Combine infantry with artillery to create armies capable of defending your base, then take your neighbors and enemies out to grow your territory. For players who don’t mind spending Facebook credits for games, the leveling up process speeds up greatly, allowing access to new units and technology without a long wait.
